Biologists brave Bushy Park
Last week, Year 13 Biologists braved the elements in Bushy Park to conduct their ecology field work practical. This visit was an essential part of their A level studies, allowing them to complete a required core practical over the course of an entire day.
Students were able to identify plant species present in the field ecosystems in the park, conduct a site survey and come up with a research question to investigate. Afterwards, they collected a range of data including species diversity, soil depth and temperature. They used two types of sampling methods - systematic and random - to collect their data, working together in small groups. Then it was back to the classroom to apply statistics to test their hypotheses.
While both teachers and students agreed that a warmer and drier day would have been welcome, students demonstrated much good humour and resilience throughout. We were all impressed by their high levels of engagement and thoughtful contributions right through the day.
Bravo, Biologists!
