Borough Sports Athletics
On Tuesday 21st May, athletes from across the borough descended on The David Weir Leisure Centre to take part in the annual Borough Sports Athletics Championships. The competition, usually held after the May half term, was earlier this year, meaning students had to really focus their training and preparation post-Easter, in order to be ready for the event. Two competitions at Woking (English Schools) and John Fisher had acted as practice and trials for the main event at Sutton.
That practice definitely paid off, with Wilson’s winning an amazing twenty medals throughout the day. In Year 7, Jesse (7S) stormed to gold in the 300m, as did Aron (7H) in the 1500m and also the 4x100m Relay Team. There were also bronze medals for Daniel (7D) in the 200m, Raphael (7H) in the 1500m and Thomas (7H) in Long Jump.
In Year 8, James (8G) showed speed, agility and excellent technique as he cruised to victory in the 80m Hurdles. Christian (8S) ran one of the races of the day, showing real class to win the 800m by fifteen seconds and just missing out on the Borough record by a second, running a fantastic 2:16s. There were silver medals in Long Jump for Isaac (8H) and the 4x100m Relay Team. Siddhu (8B) secured bronze in the 300m as well as Aarav (8B) in the High Jump.
The greatest medal haul was collected by the Year 9s. Harry (9S) won gold in the 200m, as did Rico (9C) in the Hurdles. There was also gold for the Relay Team. Philip (9H) won silver in the 300m, as did Arlo (9D) in the 1500m, Dorian (9G) in the Shot Put and Eshvar (9H) in the Long Jump. Jatin (9G) won a bronze in the Triple Jump. This excellent team effort saw the Year 9s finish 1st in their year group: congratulations.
When each of the year groups scores were combined (Y7-Y10), Wilson’s finished second overall, out of the eleven schools competing. A fantastic achievement and well deserved after all the team’s efforts.
