Wilson's School

Great British Economics Olympiad

Towards the end of last month, Ethan (Year 12) represented Wilson’s in the national final of the Great British Economics Olympiad after qualifying through two rounds of financial literacy and economics questions, competing among the top 25 students selected from 1,300 across the country.

At Rochester Independent College, participants were randomly split into groups of five and given a case study. The task was to design an actionable strategy in their groups to tackle sustainability challenges in the aviation industry. It was a high-pressure competition with two and a half hours to prepare a presentation with compelling solutions to an esteemed panel.

One of Ethan’s teams unique solutions was AI-optimised freight sharing, backed by his calculations of the standard deviation of costs and profits to run a Monte Carlo Simulation to calculate the worst-case profit. While his team did not take the top spot to qualify for the International Economics Olympiad, the experience, by his own admission, was invaluable. We congratulate him on what is, evidently, a great accomplishment!
