Hans Woyda Competition Update

After last year’s early exit in the knockout rounds, Wilson’s School entered this year’s Hans Woyda competition with renewed determination. Having battled through the group stage, the team — Anthony (Year 9), Abhinav (Year 11), Idhant (Year 12), and Akshay (Year 13) — set their sights on a historic semi-final spot. Standing in their way was an experienced Sutton Grammar side, promising a tense and competitive quarter-final clash.

From the very start, the match lived up to expectations. Both teams scored points across the opening rounds, staying neck and neck as they navigated through a range of number theory, algebra and geometry questions under timed pressure. However, by Round 5, Wilson's found themselves trailing 24-28 after a challenging team round and a particularly tough geometry section. With their semi-final hopes hanging in the balance, the team needed a strong response.

And that’s exactly what they delivered. Wilson’s edged ahead in Round 6 before producing a stunning performance in the speed round, winning 6 of the final 8 questions. Their resilience and quick thinking under pressure secured a 40-34 victory, marking their furthest-ever run in the competition.

With momentum on their side, Wilson’s now turn their focus to the semi-finals against King's College School (which will be held on Tuesday 18th March), with both teams bidding for a place in the final!
