Hans Woyda Maths Team Competition

The Hans Woyda Maths Team Competition has been running in the local area for over 40 years. It started off with schools in Sutton and has now expanded to nearly 70 schools from across London. It is a team competition formed of seven rounds, all timed, with students from Years 9, 11, 12 and 13. Mental arithmetic skills need to be fast and strong and students must work effectively in a team. There are also individual questions, quick fire questions and questions based on new and unusual mathematics.

We have now completed all three of our matches in our round-robin league and are delighted to announce that we have won every match! This means we are through to the next round, in the Spring term, which will be a knock-out competition!

Our first match in October was against Reigate Grammar school. It was an extremely close match but we won by 51 points to their 49! The squad was Anthony, Jamie, Pratyush and Minh.  In November, we were pitted against Sutton High with our squad consisting of Titus, Egemen, Idhant and Hongyu.  This time we won by 44 points (to their 38). In our final match in December, we played Woldingham. This time, our victory was more decisive, winning 63 points to their 18. The squad this time was Dexter, Houting, Shreyas and Akshay.

I am very proud of how the squad have worked really well together under some tough conditions. A particular mention to both Advait and Abhinav who have been patiently waiting to participate – their time will come in the spring!
