Several students were able to attend the prizegiving event held at the beginning of June. Here are a few of their thoughts -

By Vignesh Rama (Year 10)

On the 5th of June, several avid mathematicians from Wilson’s attended a prizegiving ceremony at the University of Southampton for their brilliant performance in the recent Southampton Maths Challenge.

The evening commenced with a tour of the vast campus, followed by a pizza buffet and a problem solving session, in which we were able to see the best solutions to the toughest questions in both the senior and junior challenges.

The ceremony concluded with an announcement of the awards and a lecture on unsolved mathematical problems by Professor Anderson, one of the most distinguished professors in the University.

Overall, it was great opportunity for the students to delve deeper into the realms of mathematics and hopefully, some were inspired to pursue it further and perhaps even be the first to find solutions to the unsolvable problems mentioned by Dr Anderson.

We are extremely grateful to Mrs Rata and the Mathematics Department for being able to organise this for us and we hope to see strong participation in the competition for years to come. Congratulations to all those involved!

By Egemen (Year 10)

A number of Wilson’s students were invited to attend an awards ceremony for their outstanding submissions to the University of Southampton Maths Challenge, held at the University of Southampton itself - a long drive from Wallington!

We were warmly welcomed to the university by a generous dinner buffet, alongside various mathematical problems, such as riddles and proofs to more tangible tangram and metal puzzles, aimed to entertain curious mathematical minds.

Certificates in recognition of pupils’ mathematical achievement were then handed out, followed by a lecture from distinguished Professor James Anderson to finish the evening, outlining his favourite questions in maths that are in fact unsolved, including the Collatz conjecture and the existence of odd perfect numbers, with an emphasis on ensuring his explanations were accessible to the whole audience.

The evening as a whole served as an excellent opportunity for Wilson’s students to explore their passion for maths in a university setting, as well as to commemorate their success in the Maths Challenge. Congratulations to all Wilson’s students involved!

Huge congratulations to every student who entered the challenge, especially those who earned a prize or certificate!
