Year 7 Latin House Competition

During our Latin lessons last week, every Year 7 pupil was fortunate enough to be put into a group and given a script - in Latin! After being taught how to pronounce letters with accents and where certain stresses should go, it was time to rehearse. We chose which classmate would be best suited to play which character and helped each other to perfect those easily muddled vowel sounds. All too soon the time for practising the script was over - we now had to show what we could do! Eight teams from every class competed for a place in the final with enthusiasm and gusto, all showing their admirable fluency and love of Latin. However, with the final fast approaching, it was imperative that we found a particularly note-worthy group to carry the weight of Brecon on their shoulders - and my group was very proud to have this honour!

The final was to be held in the Lecture Theatre with the other houses competing for first place alongside us - this only added to the pressure! All the other teams were superb and delivered their lines flawlessly, which meant that, as a team, we had to give our very best performance. Thankfully, we managed to not forget any lines or mispronounce any accents - without doubt our classroom rehearsal paying off. And as Miss Cohen read out that the winner was Brecon, our team felt a huge sense of triumph, especially with such brilliant competition from all the other Houses. I'm sure Brecon as well as Camberwell, Datchelor, Greencoat, Hayes and Southwark will all agree that this year's House Latin Speaking Competition was a success, due to the extraordinary efforts of Miss Cohen, Miss Banner and Mr Nash. I hope this competition continues to inspire many future Year 7s to practise their Latin speaking skills!

Report written by Rory (Year 7)

The Classics department was delighted to see many incredible performances for such a challenging assignment. We had the very difficult task of choosing a winning team, but also a standout performance from each group.

Everyone who came to watch and support the performers received 5 house points. The performers received 10 house points each, with Hugo (7C), Pranav (7D), Sam (7G), Jed (7H) and Leo (7S) all receiving 15 house points for excellent performances. The winning group received 20 house points each.

Well done to everyone who took part in the first Latin Reading House Competition!
