On the Tuesday 18/6 the Economics department was proud to host an on-line talk with Professor Ben Etheridge (Senior Lecturer at Essex University and Research Associate at the Institute for Fiscal Studies) to our soon to be Year 13 students. Topics discussed included the nature of the study of Economics study at university level, the future of work and possible implications for government policy, along with issues relating to A I and productivity. Plenty of time was given over to questions and discussion points in what was a lively and stimulating session.

The Economics department and student attendees want to thank Professor Etheridge for taking the time and interest to add to the department’s University Preparation Programme in such a useful way.

Professor Etheridge spoke to us about the prospect of studying economics at university. The talk was very informative, and everybody was interested and engaged, asking questions, and making notes. We discussed the effect of AI and robotics on the economy, the productivity issues in the UK, and more. Even in the short half an hour which we had with Professor Etheridge, we all learnt a lot.

Professor Etheridge's captivating lecture on the importance of studying economics at university shed light on the myriad benefits it offers. By delving into economic theories and principles, we could see that students gain valuable insights into how the world functions, enabling them to make informed decisions in their personal and professional lives. Furthermore, I discovered that studying economics equips individuals with analytical skills and a solid foundation in critical thinking, making them well-suited for a wide range of careers in both the public and private sectors. Moreover, it empowers individuals to critically analyse complex global issues and contribute to shaping policies that promote sustainable economic growth.
